Cultivation is like a horse carriage.

One thought that’s been growing stronger in me:

“Cultivation is like a horse carriage”

Many people place the Master, the Buddha, or the teachings in the horse’s position, hoping they will pull them toward enlightenment. But that’s like putting the horse behind the wagon. It cannot move.

The teachings don’t walk the path for us.

We have to become the horse ourselves. We have to pull the carriage through discipline, practice, reflection, and perseverance. The Master shows the direction, but each step is still our own.

If we keep cultivating ourselves sincerely, there may come a day when our strength is enough to embody what the teachings have pointed to all along.
